THE CORRECT WAY OF WRITING DATES

THE CORRECT WAY OF WRITING DATES
©® Santosh Kumar - Bhutan

Often we neglect to write dates correctly. It so falls out because we are carefree about life or we don't bother about correctness.

WRONG WAYS OF WRITING DATES

1. 20/12/2019
2. 20-12-2019
3. 20.12.2019
4. 20th December  2019
5. December 20th, 2019

All the formats given above are incorrect. Some of the reasons are explained as below:

A. 20/12/2019
This type of writing date is incorrect because the main function of  slash (/) Is to state "or" when we try to offer options. By composing in this form we are actually trying to say 20 or 12 or 2019 like an option in any Multiple Choice Questions. Thus, avoid using in this form.

B. 20-12-2019
The use of hyphens (-) Or minus (-) while writing date is incorrect. It is because the hyphen is used to either join words or to identify different syllables in a word and minus sign is used to subtract numbers which we are not doing while writing date. Also learn the rules for using a dash (--) to avoid confusion. Thus, avoid using in this form.

C. 20.12.2019
The use of fullstop (.) While writing date is incorrect. It is because full stop is used to stop the sentence or in an abbreviation. Sometime it also appears as decimal points. Hence, the complete dates look like a kind of IP address that makes no sense. Thus, avoid using in this form.

D. 20th December 2019 and December 20th, 2019
They are improper ways of writing dates. It is because ordinals (th, nd, and rd) are not used with day of the month. They are normally used to indicate the position or location of something or somebody. But, while spelling it out, we practice it.

THEREFORE, CORRECT WAYS ARE

20 December 2019
Or
December 20, 2019

NB: We use "comma" between 20 (Date) and 2019 (Year) Because the primary function of the comma is to segregate two separate ideas in a series.
